Birds of Poole Harbour (BoPH) is a local charity dedicated to protecting the stunning variety of bird life in the area.
Internationally important area
Poole Harbour is an internationally important area for wild birds, it is a RAMSAR site (a wetland site of international importance) and also has an SPA (Special Protection Area) designation. Birds of Poole Harbour work with the many conservation organisations and landowners operating around the Poole harbour area, including RSPB, National Trust and Dorset Wildlife Trust. South Dorset has become a national hotspot for conservation and ecotourism, and Birds of Poole Harbour are keen to make this area thrive for both wildlife and people! They mainly fund their charity through their busy event schedule.
Osprey Tours
One of their most successful projects has been the restoration of the majestic Ospreys to the Poole Harbour area, missing from the landscape for some 200 years! Since 2022 they have had a successful breeding programme, the progress of which has been watched by thousands of people, both local and international, on their webcams. Visitors have also had the opportunity to view the nest during the breeding season (from a safe distance) at Careys Secret Garden near Wareham through their Osprey Tours. Find out more about these tours (spring and early summer) on their website.
