About Ospreys in Dorset

Ospreys at Poole Harbour in Dorset

Ospreys have been missing from our landscape as a breeding bird for 180 years because of historical persecution. This tour is a chance to see the only breeding pair of Ospreys in the South. The Ospreys started breeding in 2022 as a result of the Poole Harbour Osprey Reintroduction Project, which began in 2017 led by local charity Birds of Poole Harbour and the Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation. Ospreys are a Schedule 1 species which means they are protected by law. These tours are carefully managed to ensure that the safety of the nesting birds are prioritised.

The Osprey Tour at Careys

Tickets include an in-depth 2-hour guided tour up to the Carey Osprey nest viewing platform, with the opportunity to learn more about the Poole Harbour Osprey Project from your guide, as well as access to the stunning walled garden and its facilities for the duration of the day (from 10am-4pm). The viewing platform is situated 350m away from the nest to ensure the birds are not disturbed, so we will have plenty of binoculars and telescopes on hand if you haven’t got your own.
