The New Year is traditionally the time to make resolutions for the coming 12-months that aim to improve our health, wealth, and happiness. It is the harvest period for the fitness and diet industry, as their businesses boom with those wanting to make a difference to themselves by seeking to become fitter and/or thinner. According to statistics, however, seven in 10 people who join a gym in January will have quit by May.
Fortunately, there is a much better chance of finding long-term happiness by making a difference to others, through volunteering. The Royal Voluntary Service, for example, reports that over 80% of their volunteers say the work they do has improved their mental health and sense of wellbeing. Through volunteering people can develop new skills and try new experiences, or even exploit talents they may already possess. Volunteering also helps people improve their social connections, as well as benefiting the community.
Many local charities, social groups, and support organisations rely on the help of volunteers to run their services, manage projects, and deliver events. There are a multitude of ways to become involved, as volunteering can be done at a time and frequency to suit you. If you are interested in making a difference in 2024 by becoming a volunteer, Wareham Town Council, in partnership with Wareham Town Museum, are running a Volunteer Fair on Saturday 13th January 2024, in the Town Hall. Here, you will be able to speak to local charities, voluntary groups, and organisations about the opportunities they have available and the level of commitment they are seeking. By improving your community you can also add value to your own experience within it and truly make a difference.
Wareham Volunteer Fair, Corn Exchange, Town Hall, Wareham – Saturday 13th January 2024, 10am-3pm. Free Entry. For more information please email: office@wareham-tc.gov.uk or call 01929 553006.
